If you don’t have a gas well, get one

Everybody in Nacogdoches is talking natural gas -- the Haynesville Shale to be exact.  The landman (she was actually a land lady) at the table next to me in the hotel restaurant, donors at state representative Wayne Christian’s fundraiser and the Rotarians who came to hear my energy speech all happily shared stories about the lease they just negotiated.

The Haynesville Shale, a rock formation containing oil and gas lying approximately 10,500 to 13,000 feet sub-surface, is Texas’ newest, and potentially biggest, natural gas play.  Several early wells produced very favorable results, which have resulted in a leasing frenzy in east Texas and Louisiana. Time will tell if the Haynesville Shale meets expectations.  But for now, coffee shop talk is changing from, “how’s the wife and kids?” to “how much did you get?”
